Sonoma City Flag Re-design
Proposed re-design of Sonoma’s City Flag.
3’x5’ cotton flag, 2022.

I am fascinated by city planning. Since 2017, my hometown of Sonoma, California has been burdened annually with wildfires. As you can imagine this has triggered an emotional unification of the town, but in reality everyone in the town was not affected equally. Sonoma is divided by privilege, the effects of city planning, wealth, and pure luck.
In my junior studio class I was prompted to illustrate a flag on an issue that I cared about. From purely a branding perspective most city flags are pretty heinous, creating poor moral and city unification. I invite you to Google your city flag, and unless you live in Amsterdam or Chicago you’ll be pretty disappointed.
So I set off to design a new flag for the city of Sonoma (original pictured below on the left). I hope to pitch my design to the city in 2023.
